Amulya Leona is a social activist who came into the limelight for raising the ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans at an anti-CAA protest in Bengaluru, on 20 February 2020.

Amulya Leona was born on 31 July 2000 (age 19 years; as in 2019) in Koppa, Karnataka. Her zodiac sign is Leo. She attended St. Joseph’s School in Koppa, Karnataka from lower KG to 4th class. She then joined Christ School, Manipal where she completed her 5th and 6th class. She completed 7th and 8th class from St. Norbel CBSE School, Karnataka. Later, she joined Sadvidya Comosite Pre University in Karnataka. In 2018, she joined NMKRV college for women in Karnataka to pursue her graduation in English, Journalism, and Psychology. In 2019, she started working as a translator and interpreter at Bangalore Recording Company.

She was born in a Hindu family. She lives in Saragodu, Chickmagalur, Karnataka with her family. Her father, Vaji Noronha, is the president of Hariharapura JD (s), Hubli. Her mother’s name is Laveena Nohara.

Controversy

She created a huge controversy after raising the pro-Pakistani slogan (Pakistan Zindabad!) at an anti-CAA rally, which was organised by the AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) in Bengaluru, Karnataka on 20 February 2020. Asaduddin Owaisi, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, along with two other men, rushed to stop her from raising such slogans. She continued and then started saying Hindustan Zindabad. The local police present at the protest stopped her and snatched her mike. Later, the local police filed an FIR against her under Section 124 A (sedition) and Section 153 A and B (promoting enmity) of the Indian Penal Code. She was sent to a 14 days judicial custody.

  • In December 2019, Amulya started protesting against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act 2019). She used social media sites, including dating app Tinder to share her anti-CAA views.

  • On 16 February 2020, she posted on her Facebook account “Long live for all countries including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.”
  • On 21 February 2020, after Amulya, another girl named Arudra was taken into custody for holding a placard saying “Dalit Mukti, Kashmir Mukti, and Muslim Mukti” (in the Kannada language).
  • Amulya’s father was very unhappy with Amulya’s pro-Pakistani slogans. In an interview, he said,

Her act is unpardonable and I will not try to secure bail for her. But I do not know about my instincts as a father. She has hurt me. I had asked her to refrain from making inflammatory statements but she did not pay heed. I told her that prime minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers hold offices of high esteem and she should respect their positions and also their age.”

  • On 22 February 2020, Sanjeev Maradi, an activist of the right-wing group ‘Sri Ram Sena,’ announced a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on Amulya. He released a video, in which he said,

The state and the central government should not release her under any circumstances. If she is released, we will kill her in an encounter. We on behalf of Sri Ram Sena will give a bounty of Rs 10 lakh to the person who kills her.”
