Dr. Smita Kolhe is a doctor and an Indian activist who devoted more than 30 years of her life to the people living in the backward areas of Melghat in Maharashtra. She is the wife of Dr. Ravindra Kolhe, a doctor and an Indian activist who started the battle for the upliftment of the tribal community in Melghat, Maharashtra.

Dr. Smita Kolhe was born in the year 1965 (age 55 years; as of 2020) in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Dr. Smita Kolhe started her practice in Nagpur and then she met Dr. Ravindra Kolhe who was there to complete his MD course. They both decided to get married and moved to Melghat, Maharashtra to work towards the goal of making the lives of villagers better.

Career

Dr. Smita Kolhe holds a degree in MBBS and after receiving her degree, she started practicing in Nagpur, Maharashtra. In the year 1989, she met Dr. Ravindra Kolhe, who was also a doctor and he was looking for a life partner who would help him out in his goal of working in a remote area and using their knowledge for a greater reason. He put forward certain conditions for the marriage and Dr. Smita agreed to all of them. After their marriage, they both moved to Melghat to provide their medical assistance to the villagers.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Ravindra Kolhe and Dr. Smita Kolhe received India’s fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri, from the President of India Ram Nath Kovind.

Facts/Trivia

  • Dr. Smita Kolhe gave birth to her children in the village itself and Dr. Ravindra decided to deliver the baby himself, just like he did for the other villagers. Unfortunately, there were some complications at the time of the birth of her first child and Dr. Smita was given the option to move to a better facility, but she chose to stay in the village. This helped her gain the trust and respect of the villagers.
  • The doctor couple worked together and their sincere efforts helped in reducing the infant mortality rate in the area from 200 per 1000 to 40 per 1000, and the pre-school mortality rate went down from 400 per 1000 to 100 per 1000.
  • The couple often holds workshops and camps for the youth of the village and country. In these camps and workshops, they talk about different farming techniques, the importance of farming, and how the government offers certain beneficial schemes for farming. The couple’s elder son, Rohit Kolhe, is a farmer, and their younger son Ram Kolhe, is a doctor, and he wants to become a surgeon and help his parents in the village.  The couple has been invited to several talk shows and events to talk about their life in the village and their journey.

  • Dr. Smita Kolhe was approached by the State’s Public Works Department minister who offered to build a house for the Kolhe family. Instead of a house, Dr. Smita asked him to improve the connectivity of the village, and because of her, more than 70% of the village now has proper road connectivity.
  • Dr. Smita and Dr. Ravindra Kolhe were invited to be a part of the Karamveer Special episode of the show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ on 4 December 2020.
