Penmatsa Subbaraju is an Indian film actor who mostly works in the Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada Film Industries. He is known for his films “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” (2017), “Pokiri” (2006) and “Billa” (2009). He has mostly played negative leads in the films.
Subbaraju was born on Sunday, 27 February 1977 (age 42 years; as in 2019) in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Pisces.
After completing his schooling, he did his graduation in Mathematics from D. N. R. College, Bhimavaram. Thereafter, he did a few computer courses and started working at Dell Computers in Hyderabad. Once, while working as a computer engineer, Subbaraju visited filmmaker, Krishna Vamsi’s assistant’s house to fix his computer. There he got noticed by Krishna Vamsi, who offered him a role in his film “Khadgam.”

Subbaraju belongs to a Brahmin Family. He is the son of Penmatsa Ramakrishnam Raju and Vijayalakshmi. He has one elder brother, Pullam Raju, who is a Sanskrit Lecturer.

Subbaraju started his acting career in 2003 with the Telugu Film “Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi.” He portrayed the role of a boxer in the film. His exceptional performance in the film brought him opportunities to play a fighter in further films. He, then, featured in the Tamil remake of Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi titled “M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi” and became an overnight star in the industry.
Subsequently, he played a henchman in the Telugu Film “Arya.” Some of his popular films include “Subash Chandra Bose,” “Yogi,” “Neninthe,” and “Pokiri.” He made a cameo performance in the superhit film “Baahubali: The Conclusion.”
Besides Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films, he has also acted in a few Bollywood Films. He has played the role of ‘Theda,’ a comic character, in the Bollywood Film “Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap.” He has also appeared in Ram Gopal Verma’s “Department.”
In 2017, the Excise and Prohibition Department issued summons to 12 prominent personalities of the Telugu Film Industry in connection to the Hyderabad Drug Racket. Subbaraju was one of them. The SIT (Special Investigation Team) of the Telangana Excise Department, on 21 July 2017, questioned Subbaraju about his “involvement” in the drug racket and its kingpin Calvin Mascarenhas. The actor, reportedly, revealed the names of nine actors belonging to prominent families, who were involved in the case.
